Puerta de la Ciudadela

The large stones in gray tones of the Fortress help contextualize the visitor in the Colonial era.
The door is supported on both sides by the remains of what was the imposing wall star in the armed struggle between the Portuguese and Spanish in the founding years of Colonia del Sacramento.
Its construction dates back to 1745 and looks straight at the 1811 Plaza which represents a milestone for Artigas Instructions. At it´s feet you will find a drawbridge: wood connection and heavy chains that currently serves as a backdrop to photos of tourists from around the world who want to perpetuate their visit.
This "Gate Field", was formerly the entry point to the full extent of Colonia del Sacramento, and today is one of the access to the Historical Town: declared in 1995 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
